General Features
| Modern Design - Replaces or Supplements Windows Explorer. FNO 3 provides a complete alternative to Windows Explorer, and so much more. Use FNO 3 or Windows Explorer or any other application to copy, move or delete files or folders and your FNO 3 File Notes are automatically copied, moved or deleted too. |
| Unlimited Catalog Size - Significantly Increased Search Speed. You can now create virtually unlimited notes against files and pages within files [Bookmarks] within each folder. FNO 3 will search thousands of notes almost instantly. |
Column Options. You may display or hide all of the Windows Explorer columns, select from FNO 2.7's four optional note columns and display or hide some or all of our new columns which include:
- Start Date
- Finish Date
- Thumbnail
- Bookmark
- Page# [For Bookmarking Page or Range of Pages]
- Page Count [Whole document or Pages in a Bookmark Range]
- Index [ Numeric with Decimal Point]
- Slide Show [Check Field]
- Note Edit Date/Time, which tracks your note creation and modification
| Simple Upgrade from v2.7. The notes catalogs in v2.7 are automatically imported into new FNO 3 catalogs. You can continue to use v2.7 while you get familiar with FNO 3. |

Image and Document Viewing
Integrated viewer with support for all popular graphics formats including Scansoft's Paperport MAX format and Multi-Page TIFF files.
(Embedded support for viewing and bookmarking popular office documents, like Word, Wordperfect, and PDF is currently under test, and will be released for beta testing shortly) |
| Thumbnail Column. Fast display of thumbnails for all formats supported by the viewer formats, including Paperport MAX, JPG, TIFF, BMP, GIF and a host of others. |
Slide Show. You can create a slide show from a selection of files or bookmarks. FNO 3 will remember your saved selections for use in presentations.
Bookmarking
| Page Bookmarks. A revolutionary ability to write multiple notes against each file and each page within a file [BookMark]. This allows you to bring order to any multi-page TIFF or PaperPort stack. The bookmarked page is even displayed as a thumbnail, or full size within the viewer. Bookmarked pages can be filtered and searched for just like any normal file note. |
| Highlight/Annotation Bookmarks. Draw yellow highlights over an image or a page within a TIFF file, then use save annotation to create a bookmark that memorizes the annotated page, your zoom when you save and can even show you a cropped image that just shows the highlighted material without changing the original document. It is all done with external overlays that you can share or keep from others you wish to share your files with.
These screenshots show the steps from viewing a file to highlighting an area and saving it as a bookmark:

Zoom/Crop Photo Bookmarks. You take one picture, perhaps your first grade class photo, and make 50 separate bookmarks showing each classmate up close and personal. Use crop, rotate and zoom to get just the right image and save it as a Bookmark. Fifty students, fifty bookmarks, each with a thumbnail showing zoom and crop. Imagine a family photo... you can create a cropped and zoomed bookmark of just little Bobby, without the need to save another file... the bookmark re-creates the segment dynamically from the original file.
| Video Bookmarks. View a video in the internal viewer, and add begin and end markers, then save it as a video bookmark, which you can write notes against. You even get a thumbnail image of the starting frame of the video segment. Your bookmarks can become part of a slide-show which enable your clips to be assembled into a presentation. No changes are made to the original video file and no extra video files are created in the process. |
Other Improvements
| File Detection and Prompting. A new background service is able to detect the creation or opening of files in any or all of the folders on your PC and network without any performance or memory consumption. As with version 2.7 you can be prompted for notes as a file is saved by any application, and now you can be prompted as files are opened too. |
| Printing of Notes. You can now print your Catalogs. You can perform a search or filter to display the notes you want, and then choose various page settings for header, footer, and borders. |
| Printing Files. All the file types supported by the viewer can also be printed |
| Layouts and Templates. Save the way you have laid out the application for particular uses. For example, with a click you can change from having a large viewer and a simple file list to having no viewer with many file notes columns on display. |
| Flood Fill Notes. Quickly create catalogs by searching for files that match various criteria, and automatically adding keywords or notes. |
| Virtual Folders. Create a virtual folder by dragging various folders into a catalog collection. The collection of catalogues can be browsed and filtered just as if it were a normal folder, even though the contents are from many places on your PC. This enables you to create a collection for a special task, while leaving all the files in their current folders. |
